'The Birds', a solo exhibition of prints by Hanneke van Ryswyk will be opened by artist Jim Doolan WCSI UWS at the Norman Gallery on Saturday October 1st 2011 at 3pm. Hanneke van Ryswyk, born Wales 1983, and raised in the Netherlands, graduated from Swansea Metropolitan University in 2006 and since then has been selected for group exhibitions in Dublin, London, Paris and Boston. Van Ryswyk moved to Bunclody in January 2011 and has been inspired by the many birds in her surroundings. This began with rooks, blackbirds and robins visiting her garden and led to drawings of peacocks made at Johnstown Castle, Wexford and the Palace gardens of Granada and Seville, Spain. Van Ryswyk works on an intimate scale and chooses to create works that are unique, one-off prints. Her monotypes and monoprints combine open spaces with a multitude of surfaces involving intricate patterns, delicate lines, and broad sweeps of vibrant colour. Each plate is worked on at length to produce an image, often built in layers using several printmaking techniques and finally printed. In the case of drypoints, Hanneke creates editions limited to a maximum of 5 per plate. When using the lino etch method she gently etches lino to manipulate and mould the surface using tools one would normally use for sculpting clay in order to create a diversity of textures within the image. 'The Birds' a solo exhibition of prints by Hanneke van Ryswyk featuring drypoints, monotypes, collographs and lino etches filled with a playful, mysterious and enigmatic cast of birds in natural and imagined spaces runs from October 1 – October 9 at The Norman Gallery, Rathnure, Enniscorthy. The artist will give a demonstration of her printmaking techniques on Sunday October 9th at 3pm. Admission free. All welcome.
