ORIGIN an exhibition of paintings and unique prints by Hanneke van Ryswyk opens at The Norman Gallery, Rathnure, County Wexford on Saturday 6th October at 4pm.

It has been a prolific and successful year for Bunclody artist Hanneke van Ryswyk. Her hugely successful first solo exhibition at The Norman Gallery, this time last year, led to her being invited to exhibit in both Dublin and Melbourne. The artist born in Wales, and raised in the Netherlands, graduated from Swansea Metropolitan University in 2006. Since then she has been selected for group exhibitions in Dublin, London, Paris and Boston. Hanneke has held two solo exhibitions in Ireland since moving to Bunclody in January 2011.

Already this year, Hanneke has been awarded a residency at Cill Rialaig artist's retreat, Kerry and has been invited by Olivier Cornet Gallery to exhibit at VUE Contemporary Art Fair at the RHA, Dublin in November. Her painting 'Desert Island' was purchased by the OPW at her solo show in Dublin in May this year.

This will be Hanneke's second solo exhibition at the Norman Gallery. Speaking about her new paintings and prints, van Ryswyk says “This body of work highlights the ground we live on. Reminding us not to forget it. That it is still here, still beautiful.”

For this collection of new work, Hanneke has ground her own pigment including locally sourced iron oxide, building her paintings with acrylic paint and plaster in numerous layers through washes and glazes of colour. Her process of building and eroding layers of paint, mirrors the formation of the earth's crust. In many of the painted works, layer upon layer are fused through sanding; revealing a textured relief.

In printmaking, van Ryswyk works on an intimate scale and chooses to create works that are unique, one-off prints. Her drypoint and carborundum prints combine open spaces with a multitude of surfaces combining delicate lines and broad sweeps of subtle colour. Each plate is worked on at length to produce an image, often built in layers using several printmaking techniques and finally printed.

ORIGIN by Hanneke van Ryswyk runs daily at The Norman Gallery, Rathnure from 12-6pm until 21st October. Admission is free and all are welcome. Contact Jeremy Hill at 053 925 5071 or 053 925 5145.
